The importance of how you release the pressure

I've felt a bit better the last week or so and I've focused a bit more on Franz. We are still in a very early stage where I want to gain his trust and realy show him that he can be comfortable with me and believe that I will not do anything that he is uncomfortable with and that I will listen to, and respect his boundaries.

He has challenged me and my way of practicing "horse training" and I find it very developing and interesting.

The last week he has started to greet me in the paddock. He comes towards me, pointed ears and just very slowly walks up to me.
What do I  do? And how do I respond?
Just by turning my side to him, relax and give him a treat when he has touched my hand. Then I slowly walk away. Just a couple of steps. It is my way of trying to show him that I will not put more pressure on him or force myself upon him and so far it has been a great success.

Sometimes I ask if I may stroke his forehead. Sometimes he let me and sometimes he doesn't. If he don't, I accept it and walks away. He has started to follow me around the paddock. The feeling is a indescribable!

I have started very slowly to be able to walk up to him aswell. Sometimes he shows that it is okay and sometimes he gives me small signals that he is not ready. It can be very subtile like a small turning away with his head or just a hint of tensing his body. If he does, I just simply stop or turn around and walk away again.

I also try to be constant aware of never applying any pressure on him. If I need to pass him I choose to go a halfcircle around him trying to show my side to him and not look at him.

And no - I am not a single bit afraid that I am not showing dominance or "letting him lead" and that it will cause problems later on. I a actually quite certain that if I did it would definitly cause a LOT of troubles later on.

My black stallion.
